Shooting Struggles Plague Devils in Fifth Straight Loss

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team shot a season-low 26.2% (16-61) from the field and went just 5-25 (20%) outside the arc as the Red and Black suffered their fifth consecutive loss falling to the visiting Mules of Muhlenberg College 61-52 on Thursday night at the Kline Center. Ryan Robinson led the Devils with a double-double posting 15 points and ten rebounds.

The two sides went a combined 0-7 from the field over the opening two minutes until Jayson Williams-Johnson canned a pair of triples for the 6-0 edge. Robinson finally snapped the hosts skid at the 3:54 mark with a jumper, but Williams-Johnson answered with his third shot from downtown to make it 9-2 with 15:44 left. Four points by Drew Haueisen and a three-ball for Andrew Gostovich pulled DC to within 13-9, before a triple out of the hands of Robinson brought it down to 13-12. The Devils then took the lead at 14-13 when Robinson forced the ball loose from Luke Gordos and ended the fast break with a thunderous dunk. Muhlenberg tied the score at 14-14 on a Gordos foul shot and then went back on top with a layup for Nicholas Chudy. The Mules then extended their lead with a 9-2 run finished off with a Dan Gaines foul shot making it 25-16 at the 16:37 mark. Lucas Curran, Randy Shephard, and Haueisen all converted at the charity line during the rest of the half, but the Red and Black went to the break down 29-20.

Dickinson came out of the locker room with new life going on a 9-2 charge over the opening 2:12 to trim the margin to 31-29, with buckets coming from Anthony Goeb, Luke Spellman, and Robinson. A long-range shot from Robinson cut the deficit to 33-32, but then a Tommy McGuire layup sparked an 8-2 Mules gallop ending on a Gaines triple making it 41-34 with 12:46 left. DC would trail by eight (44-36) at the halfway point of the period thanks to a driving layup by Nate Henty Brown. Spellman and Chudy exchanged free throws to hold the margin at eight (46-38). Goeb would record five points during a 7-2 push by the Red and Black to make it 48-45 still with 6:11 remaining. William-Johnson netted the next nine points for the Mules, as a Haueisen layup provided the only Devils offense during that stretch as the home team fell behind 57-49. Robinson would knock down a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it would not be enough as the Mules secured the 61-52 win.
