Volleyball Comes Up Short at York

YORK, Pa. - Despite a season-high 13 kills from Morgan Biggs the Dickinson volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback in their non-conference finale on the road at York (Pa.) on Thursday night. The Spartans took the match by scores of 25-23, 26-24, and 25-22.

The Devils began the match strong with two kills from Biggs and a combination block by Emma Lange along with Biggs gave the visitors a 5-3 edge. Back-to-back Spartan points drew them level at 5-5, before Alexa Barowski Jenna Schumann, and Lange supplied offense to give DC the 14-12 advantage. York then ripped off eight of the next nine points thanks to Alyssa Mott, Megan Rizzi, Sydney Wilber, and Tyler Williams to jump in front 20-15. Kills by Hanna Riley and Lange aided a 4-0 DC push to close within 20-19, however, YCP answered with a 4-1 push of their own to make it 24-20. Three consecutive Biggs kills made it 24-23, but Claire Shorb put down the final kill of the set.

Biggs and Lange got the Devils out to a fast start in the second as they took a 6-3 lead. Rizzi put away three kills during a 7-2 run for the home side to claim a slim 10-8 edge. Dickinson fought back with scores from Barowski, Biggs, and Lange to storm back ahead 15-13. Two aces by Williams brought YCP to the lead at 16-15. An Elise Butler kill and an ace from Lange pulled DC even 19-19. Dickinson then swung the momentum back in their favor with scores from Jordan Schucker, Biggs, Lange, and Riley making it 24-21. Unfortunately, York picked up the following five points with a kill from Wilber wrapping up a 26-24 win.

The two sides were nip and tuck at the beginning of the third set with Biggs, Riley, and Schumann recording kills to knot the score at 11-11. Rizzi and Williams mounted a 5-1 push to take a 16-12 advantage. DC chipped away at the deficit with Biggs and Lange putting down kills to cut the deficit down to 17-15. Rizzi, Williams, and Wilber brought the energy back into Wolf Gymnasium with a 5-1 run to make it 22-16. However, the Devils would not go quietly as Emma Popham, Barowski, and Riley scored on six of the ensuing seven points closing the margin to one, 23-22. The Spartans would pick up the next two points to finish off the set and match.
