Red Devils Drop Five Set Heartbreaker to Diplomats

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball got ten kills each from Emma Lange and Hanna Riley, but it would not be enough as the visiting Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats outlasted the Devils in five sets on Wednesday night at the Kline Center. F&M won by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 15-25, and 15-13.

The visitors began the match strong with kills from Lauren Arnold, Sydney Levins, and Jada West to grab a 9-3 lead. Dickinson would get back within 11-7 thanks to three F&M errors and a kill by Jenna Schumann. The next five belonged to the guests as they stretched the margin to 16-7. The Red Devils responded in a big way with Morgan Biggs, Lange, and Riley mounting a 12-4 charge to cut the deficit to 20-19. Unfortunately, five of the final six points went to the away side for the 25-20 win.

The second set started nip and tuck with the two sides sharing the opening ten points. Kills from Jordan Schucker and Schumann helped a 9-4 home push to take a 14-9 lead. F&M would outscore the Devils 7-6 over the ensuing 13 points to trim the margin by just one at 20-16. After a kill by Riley made it 21-18, the Diplomats came roaring back with five straight points with an ace by Arnold giving them a 23-21 edge. However, that just seemed to wake the Devils up with Lange and Riley capping a 4-0 DC run to take a 25-23 victory.

With the third tied at 6-6 the guests went to work with Arnold, Levins, and West mounting a 10-2 charge to jump ahead 13-7. Alex Barowski, Christina Chu, and Biggs cut it to 13-10, before the Diplomats closed out the frame on a 12-4 rampage to grab a 2-1 edge.

The fourth went pretty much like the third just in reverse as with the score knotted 5-5, Dickinson got scores from Barowski, Biggs, Lange, Riley, and Schumann to storm ahead 19-7. Back-to-back F&M points made it 19-9, before Grace Coccagna, Lange, and Schucker notched four consecutive points extending the margin to 23-9. The Diplomats did not go quietly though picking up the following four points bringing it to 24-15, prior to an attacking error giving DC the set.

F&M stormed out of the blocks in the fifth as Allison Franke and Levins giving them a 6-1 lead. That sparked the Devils attack with Barowski, Biggs, Lange, and Riley all recording kills during a 7-2 run to draw level 8-8. Barowski, Lange, Riley, and Schumann kept fighting for the Devils as things stayed locked up at 13-13. However, a Franke kill and a DC mishit gave the set an match to the Diplomats.
