Devils Claim Top Spot at DuCharme Invitational

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's indoor track and field team got their 2021-22 season off to a fantastic start beating out the five-team field at the DuCharme Invitational inside the Kline Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils got off to a quick start with Elizabeth Cassell winning the 5000m with a time of 18:51.17 to beat out fellow Devil Myra Naqvi in second (19:25.51).

Dickinson occupied four of the Top-5 slots in the 55m hurdles with Sophia Kovatsis edging out Alexandra Colby by .02. After Claire Miller from Messiah took third, Darya Mikusova (9.67) and Naomi Alperin (9.71) claimed fourth and fifth. Then, in the straight 55m dash, Sara Penuela came in at 7.56 good for second, behind Tahira Bakare of Goucher College at 7.51.

The group of Lilianna Matala, Laura Berman, and Molly Heron ran in a pack during the women's one-mile run taking second through fourth with times of 5:36.97, 5:42.90, and 5:56.91 respectively.

The Red Devil team of Maddie Brown, Alexandra Colby, Mariana Penuela, and Sara Penuela won the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:50.54, while the group of Eliza Gichner, Abbe Kitchin, Darya Mikusova, and Evelyn Swayze came in third crossing the stripe in 1:54.89.

Brown would then claim the individual title in the 400m with a mark of 1:07.12, beating out teammate Lillian Cusa by .34. Morgan Mooradian earned a fourth-place result with a time of 1:10.99.

The Devils put up a dominant performance in the 800m claiming the top four spots led by a 2:30.36 from Sarah Yanega, followed by Charlotte Kratovil-Lavelle (2:33.60), Matala (2:33.66), and Heron (2:34.09). Julia Hoffritz (2:36.97) and Laura Berman (2:38.49) also landed inside the Top-10. 

Leah Biwott, Emerlee Simons, and Kitchin put up solid showings in the 200m with times of 28.42, 28.53, and 29.14. 

The team of Brown, Mikusova, Penuela Rodriguez, and Swayze won the 4x400m relay crossing the line in 4:22.30.

Sara Penuela posted a mark of 5.26m to win the long jump beating out her sister Mariana by .05m. The 4.98m jump by Annie Leder was good for fourth, while Elizabeth Lieb recorded a 4.93m leap for fifth.

Leder and Lieb took second as well as third in the triple jump with marks of 10.13m and 9.99m.

Colby continued the Devils dominance in the field winning the pole vault clearing a height of 2.75m. Lily Swain earned a third-place result after getting over 2.60m.

The shot put belonged to Dickinson with the Red and Black taking seven of the Top-10 places. Abby Everett led the way with 11.93m, beating the Claire Shearer mark of 10.41m. Sarayne Forbes (9.68m), Emily Hull (9.62m), Mia Raso (9.22m), Kovatsis (8.96m), and Analisa Groble (8.84m) completed the Devil group. 

Kovatsis was the only member of DC in the Top-3 of the high jump taking third with a mark of 1.35m.

Dickinson posted a team score of 249 to win the meet beating out second-place Messiah University by 125 points. Goucher College (64), Lehman College (18), and Hood College (10) completed the scoring.

Dickinson gets back to work on Friday night at 5 p.m. when they head to the Ursinus Bow Tie Invite in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
