(Lexington, Va.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team made a great run after a strong start by #3-ranked Washington & Lee but the Generals would rebuild the lead in the second half on the way to a 19-11 win on Wednesday.
W&L opened the game with three straight goals and stretched the margin to 7-1 at the 21:13 mark and led 9-3 with just under 14 minutes to play in the half.
The Red Devils looked to rally, scoring four straight as seniors Anne Dunster (Cos Cobb, Conn./Greenwich) and Sam Marmo (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) found classmate Eleanor Kaestner (Glyndon, Md./Franklin) for back-to-back goals to trigger the run.
Sophomore Mack Maurer (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) dished out an assist to Dunster for her second goal of the game and then found the net unassisted to cut the deficit to 9-7 at the 5:12 mark.
Katherine Faria struck twice for W&L to close out the half with the Generals leading 11-7.
The Generals capitalized on three free position goals as they had another strong start out of the break. Dani Murray scored four times, netting three FP's in a 6-0 clip to stretch the margin to 17-7.
Marmo broke up the run and the Red Devils would outscore the hosts, 4-2, over the final 14 minutes as Maurer tallied two more assists to Kaestner and added another, finding Erika Bloes (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) for their final tally of the day.
Maurer led the attack with one goal and five assists while Dunster recorded a hat-trick with three goals and one assist. Kaestner tallied four goals on the afternoon. Maurer added four draw controls and Greta Holt (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) pulled in seven draws on the day.
The Red Devils slip to 4-2 after facing a pair of teams ranked in the top-11 in their last two outings. They travel to Bridgewater College on Saturday for a 12:00 pm start.
