Montgomery's Double-Double Not Enough for Devils on Tuesday

SCRANTON, Pa. - Kate Montgomery posted her second double-double on the season racking up 11 points and hauling in a dozen rebounds, but it was not enough as the Dickinson women's basketball team dropped a 53-44 decision on Tuesday night to the University of Scranton Royals in day one of the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic.

Gina Neigel and Kyra Quigley exchanged buckets inside the first 30-seconds of the game, but then the scoring ran dry over the next two minutes until Montgomery tallied her first points of the contest. Hannah Angelini and Bridget Monaghan gave the Royals a 6-4 edge, before triples by Clair Marion and Jennifer Kremp made it 10-6 DC. Buckets from Marion and Montgomery pushed it to 13-8, prior to a buzzer-beating jumper by Quigley cut the margin to 13-10 after one.

Scranton began the second strong as a three-ball by Allie Lynch knotted the score at 13-13 and sparked an 8-2 home run to take an 18-15 edge with 2:46 gone. The Devils responded with an 8-0 charge of their own on buckets from Caitlin Blackman, Indatou Ali-Goukoye, Marion, and Montgomery to reclaim the lead at 23-20. However, triples by Lynch and Monaghan gave the Royals a 26-23 advantage at the half.

A three-pointer from Lindsey Hollenshead and a foul shot by Neigel cut the deficit to 28-27 with 8:42 left in the third. Unfortunately for Dickinson, a jumper for Maddie Hartnett sent the Royals on an 11-2 ramage with Mia Kolb supplying the lone Devils score making it 39-29. Hollenshead finished off a nice feed from Blackman to bring the margin under double-digits (39-31), but Scranton netted the final six points of the frame to take a 45-31 lead to the fourth.

The Devils were determined not to go down quietly as Kremp knocked down four straight free throws and Marion along with Montgomery converted layups to pull the Red and Black within 45-39 still with 4:43 to play. A triple by Lynch made it 48-39, but layups from Kolb and Montgomery trimmed the gap to 48-43 inside a minute left. The Royals were able to seal the game at the free-throw line knocking down five of six, while Kremp hit on one of two for the 53-44 final.
