Women’s Basketball Edged by River Hawks in Home Opener

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Dickinson women's basketball team got a combined 33 points between Jennifer Kremp and Kate Montgomery, but it would not be enough as the visiting Susquehanna University River Hawks held on for a 62-58 win on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Kline Center.

Dickinson began the game extremely slow as five missed shots and two turnovers saw them go behind 13-0 with 2:50 gone. It took the Devils until the 4:35 mark to get on the board as Lindsey Hollenshead found Montgomery for the layup. Kremp and Hollenhead converted at the stripe to chip the deficit down to 18-5 with 1:39 to play. Dickinson continued to battle scoring five of the final six points thanks to a trey by Kremp and two by Hollenshead to make it 19-10 after one.

Sadie Comfort extended the margin to 21-10 to start the second, but then DC responded with a 7-0 run on buckets by Hollenshead, Kremp, and Montgomery to get within 21-17 with less than three minutes gone. The River Hawks lead remained at four (23-19) for a four-minute span before Kayla Rose netted four straight to end the half at 23-23.

Susquehanna held the early lead in the third with scores from Olivia Brandt, Amanda Lemire, Kaitlyn Lynch, and Erin McQuillen making it 32-29 with Mia Kolb, Gina Neigel, and Montgomery accounting for the DC offense. With the Devils trailing 33-30 at the halfway point, Montgomery scored four points to give the home side the 34-33 edge. The rest of the frame would seesaw back and forth with Caitlin Blackman hitting from the field and Neigel delivering from deep to leave Dickinson ahead 42-39 going to the fourth.

Four of the first six points went to the visitors with Neigel getting the Devils lone layup. Kremp would then knock down a triple to give the hosts a 47-43 advantage. However, Olivia Brandt scored five points during a 7-0 push by Susquehanna to reclaim the 50-47 edge at the 3:19 mark. The following seven points scored in the game all came at the foul line with Clair Marion, Blackman, and Montgomery hitting from the charity line to draw level 52-52 with five minutes to go. Dickinson would take a 54-53 lead with 3:30 left on a Montgomery layup after a steal by Marion and a nice feed from Blackman. Unfortunately back to back triples from McQuillen and Brandt got the Hawks in front 59-55 in the final minute. Blackman and Kremp would pull DC within 59-58, but free throws from Megan Emlet and Lemire were enough to finish out the 62-58 win.
