(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team rallied past host Swarthmore, erasing a 10-point halftime deficit to overtake the Garnet, 59-52, on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils erupted with back-to-back 20-point quarters in the second half while holding Swarthmore to just eight points over the final 10 minutes after Courtney Anderson hit a three-pointer for the Garnet to end the third quarter.
Four different players scored for the Red Devils as the hosts took a 17-9 lead at the end of the first after a late three-pointer from Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown).
Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored twice and Tina Semevolos (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) knocked down a three-pointer in the second quarter with Swarthmore holding a 28-18 lead at halftime.
Deutsch combined with Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) to score the first 12 points of the third for the Devils to cut the deficit to five at 35-30, with three minutes to play in the period.
First-year guard Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) went into takeover mode, scoring the next seven points to keep Dickinson within three.
Swarthmore added a free throw early in the fourth before Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) buried a three-pointer and Leverone converted a three-point play to knot the game at 45-45.
Kolb put the Red Devils in front before Leverone sank a triple, made a steal and fed Maeda for a 52-45 advantage at the 5:35 mark. Leverone found Maeda for a three-pointer and Kolb dished an assist to Montgomery as Dickinson stretched the lead to 57-46.
The Garnet made a run, pulling within five, but Leverone would seal the win with a pair of free throws with seven seconds on the clock.
Leverone netted a career-high 17 points, hitting 6-of-7 free throws to go with four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Deutsch tallied 14 points and six rebounds while Maeda finished with nine.
Kolb added five points, five rebounds (four offensive), two assists and three steals and Montgomery had four points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) pulled down four rebounds and handed out two assists.
The Red Devils improve to 10-10 overall and 8-7 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Johns Hopkins University at 6:00 pm on Thursday night.
