(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team went on the road to claim a 51-45 win at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils had a quick start, jumping out to an 8-0 lead behind four different scorers but the Bears would rally with 11 unanswered points in the first quarter.
Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) hit a free throw and followed up a miss with a lay-up in the second. She added another field-goal and Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) hit a pair of free throws and had a nice assist to keep the Devils close as the Bears took a 23-22 lead into halftime.
Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) made a strong move and would convert a pair of free throws for the first points of the third quarter and Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) followed up with a three-pointer to put the Red Devils back in front, 27-23.
A strong move inside from Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and a pair of free throws along with a three-pointer from Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) put Dickinson up, 36-27, at the midpoint of the quarter.
The hosts closed out the period with a 5-0 run to make the score 36-32 at the final break.
Padalino fed Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) for a quick basket to start the fourth.
Kolb sparked the Devils with three straight rebounds and a blocked shot before taking a steal to rim to give Dickinson a 43-34 advantage with 6:32 remaining in the game.
Kolb snagged an offensive rebound and fed a nice pass to Deutsch and Maeda made strong drive to keep the Red Devils in front.
The Bears kept battling, cutting the deficit to five but Deutsch countered off a nice feed from Maira for a 49-42 lead with 30 seconds to play. Kolb and Maira added free throws before Gabby Downs hit a late three-pointer for the final of 51-45.
Kolb turned in another strong outing, scoring nine points to go with seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Montgomery finished with nine points and six rebounds while Padalino controlled 11 rebounds, adding seven points and three assists.
Maira tallied six points, six rebounds and four steals with Maeda netting six points as well. Deutsch added eight points, two boards and two blocked shots.
The Red Devils improve to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Gettysburg College on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
