(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team opened the new year with a 71-59 win over visiting Juniata College on Thursday night.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 21-15 lead at the first break. Senior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) hit a pair of early three-pointers, netting eight points in the opening period.
Dickinson built the lead to as many as 13 in the second quarter, scoring seven points off turnovers while going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Hannah Peck (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart) knocked down a late three-pointer before the Kymiah Carpenter pulled the Eagles within nine at halftime, 40-31.
Padalino fed first-year Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) for a three-pointer and scored twice as Montgomery returned the favor with a pair of assists to put the Red Devils up, 49-35, with just over seven minutes to play in the third quarter.
Juniata used a quick 7-0 run to cut the deficit in half before Dickinson built the lead back to 11 at the end of the period.
Sophomore Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) had a strong start in the final quarter, netting five quick points as the Red Devils kept the lead in double digits for the better part of the fourth.
Padalino hit a pair of late baskets to finish with a game-high 18 points on the night, going 8-for-11 from the field, adding six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) dished out six assists on the night, scoring seven points and recording a pair of steals. First-year Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) tallied 10 points while Peck had nine points, three rebounds and two assists.
Montgomery finished with seven points and five rebounds and Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) had points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Red Devils improve to 4-5 on the season. The are home again on Saturday, hosting Bryn Mawr College at 2:00 pm.
