(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team turned in a great performance on the road to post its first win of the season, topping Muhlenberg College 70-59 on Tuesday night.
The teams went back-and-forth in the early going. Junior Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) and senior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) hit three-pointers at the end of the first quarter to keep the teams tied, 15-15.
Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) knocked down a three-pointer to put the Red Devils up, 24-16, with just under five minutes to play in the half and countered a 6-0 run by Muhlenberg with another three-pointer off an assist from Maira to lead 27-22 at the break.
Padalino scored four straight points and Maira buried a pair of three-pointers to give Dickinson a 37-24 lead, early in the third quarter and Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) made a steal and hit two free throws to end the quarter with Dickinson holding a 44-35 advantage.
Padalino and Heiring buried three-pointers to start the final stanza, stretching the Dickinson lead to 50-41.
Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) pulled down a big rebound and went strong to the basket for a lay-up as the Red Devils looked to gain some momentum at 52-43.
Dickinson put together an extended possession, grabbing a pair of offensive rebounds, drawing three fouls and ending with a basket from Maira with just under five minutes remaining. Muhlenberg quickly countered on the other end to cut the lead to nine, but Maira came right back with a three-pointer to make the score 57-45.
After the Mules converted some free throws, Padalino hit a three-pointer to give Dickinson a 12-point lead with time winding down near the two-minute mark.
The Red Devils made a great defensive stand and Maira made a strong move, scoring on a driving lay-up for a 62-48 advantage with just over a minute to play.
The Mules hit a three-pointer and used a traditional three-point play to cut the margin to eight before Maeda raised it back to double figures with a pair of free throws.
The Red Devils would hold on down the stretch with a solid performance from the line for the final of 70-59 to claim their first win of the season.
Padalino led the Red Devils with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. She hit a trio of three-pointers as the team combined for 10 on the night. Maira added three triples, scoring 17 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists.
Maeda finished with a trio of three-pointers, scoring 11 points while adding six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Heiring went 5-for-6 from the line for a line of eight points, four rebounds and three steals. Montgomery tallied six points and five rebounds and Leverone finished with six points, going 4-for-4 from the line.
The Red Devils improve to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face McDaniel College on December 4 at 6:00 pm.
