(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team made a great run at visiting Moravian College in the season opener on Friday night before the Greyhounds slipped away with a 73-58 decision.
Sophomore Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) had a strong start for the Red Devils, hitting 13-of-16 shots for 27 points, adding five rebounds on the night.
The Greyhounds jumped out early, but Dickinson would keep them in striking distance, trailing 20-14 at the first break. Deutsch opened the second quarter with a three-point play to quickly cut the deficit to three.
Moravian built the lead to eight, but the Red Devils would keep coming, cutting the margin to three again on a three-pointer from sophomore Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) with just over four minutes to play in the half.
Deutsch traded baskets with Karlie Brogan to end the half with Moravian holding a 35-28 advantage. Deutsch struck again to start the third, but the Greyhounds would put together a strong run to lead 48-30 at the midpoint of the quarter.
Junior Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) hit a three-pointer, a lay-up and a pair of free throws to keep the lead at 17 at the end of the third.
The Red Devils went on a 9-1 run to start the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just nine with 4:02 remaining. Moravian would keep the lead down the stretch with some solid free throw shooting for the final of 73-58.
Senior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) add six points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while junior Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) dished out eight assists to go with five points, six rebounds and three steals. Kremp finished with five points and four rebounds.
The Red Devils travel to Misericordia University next Wednesday for a 7:00 pm tip-off with the Cougars.
