Strong Hitting Leads to Monday Split for Softball

(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson softball team continued its strong start, improving to 3-1 on the season, splitting a pair of games on Monday in Tucson.

The Red Devils took a 2-1 lead over St. Scholastica in the opener, but the Saints would rally with four runs in the top of the seventh to escape with a 5-2 win. The Red Devils regrouped and erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to close out a 10-0 decision over Skidmore in the nightcap.

The Red Devils countered a one-run second by St. Scholastica with two in the bottom of the third. Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) led-off with a walk and moved to third on an error as Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Sophomore Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) singled to score Parise and put the Red Devils on top, 2-1.

The Red Devils booked two outs in the seventh, but the Saints triggered a rally with a solo homerun from Maggie Shley. They added a pair of doubles to produce three more runs to claim the 5-2 decision.

Shley earned the win in the circle, holding the Red Devils to just two hits on the day. Gutpelet drew a pair of walks while first-year Paige Hahn (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) went 1-for-1 with a walk.

Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) suffered loss, recording three strikeouts in a complete game effort.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Skidmore in game two. McConney was hit by a pitch and Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) drew a walk after Siecinski reached on a two-out single. First-year Hannah Seburn (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) hit a hard shot to centerfield, scoring Siecinski and McConney.

Hahn launched a double in the third inning to score Acocella and Seburn to stretch the lead to 4-0. They added another in the fourth as Gutpelet walked, moved to third on a sacrifice from Parise and came in to score on a single from Sieciski.

The Red Devils doubled the scored in the fifth after Hahn started off the inning with a double. Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) tallied an RBI single and Siecinski drove in two runs on a single to right field.

McConney hit into an error in right field, scoring Keller and Seburn tacked on another RBI with a single to score Siecinski for the final of 10-0.

Siecinski led the charge, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Seburn drove in three runs with two hits and Seburn finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Gutpelet went 1-for-1 with a run scored and three walks in the nightcap.

Milaszewski went all five innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while recording five strikeouts.

The Red Devils move to 3-1 on the season. They are scheduled to face Central (Iowa) and Case Western Reserve on Tuesday, weather permitting.
