Burling Nets Two, But Devils Fall in Overtime

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Tyson Burling scored two goals in the second half, but it would not be enough as the Swarthmore College Garnet got a goal at the 1:49 mark of the second overtime to claim a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference fixture.

The early part of the match was played in the midfield as it would take until the 18th-minute to see the first shot as Conor Gill sent one over the top of Andrew Kempe in net. Dickinson finally got their chance at the 29:09 mark was Ronan Higgins worked himself loose for a blast, but it did not test Max Kral. Antonio Callegari would have the final attempt of the half, however, it was snuffed out by the Devils backline.

The keepers finally got some work in the second half when Charley Ward was stopped by Kempe in the 49th before Burling was denied by Kral two minutes later. Dickinson would break Kral's clean sheet with 55:09 gone as Burling made a strong run down the right side and ripped a shot between the keeper and the post for the 1-0 lead. However, the Garnet answered right back with Harry Nevins heading the ball past Kempe off a corner as he got lost in the box thanks to a solid service from Leo Hecht. Swarthmore had the ensuing three chances but did not force Kempe into a save. Then in the 68th-minute Kral was tested by Nigel Woodroffe, before Woojin Shin could not knock the ball past Kempe a minute later. The Devils claimed their second lead of the night at the 70:12 mark when Geoffrey Ogenrwot sprinted up the left side and found a wide-open Burling for the finish and the 2-1 edge. Less than four minutes later the Garnet were on level terms as Shin slipped the ball into the net. Kral would have to make one other save in regulation turning away Woodroffe for the second time sending the match to overtime.

In the extra sessions, the Garnet was the side on the front foot as they had the only three chances of the first extra session before Hecht forced a rebound off Kempe that was pushed home by Shin for the 3-2 winner.
