(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team claimed a key Centennial Conference match-up on Saturday, turning back visiting Washington College, 2-1, at Miller Memorial Field.
The Red Devils struck in the 20th minute as Mohammed Kane (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) served a nice ball to set up Kevin Gilbert (Boxford, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy, N.H.) who found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Washington put a strong shot off the post at the 16-minute mark and had a few more strong attacking runs, but the score held at the break, 1-0.
The Red Devils would double-up the Shoremen as junior Will Brock (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) served a beautiful free-kick into the area and right to the head of Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy, N.H.) which led to an own goal off a Washington defender.
McGovern looked for some redemption, following up with another shot just moments later that went just wide of the net.
The Red Devils kept bringing the pressure as Gilbert made a nice move and launched a long shot with the goalkeeper well of the line, but the shot also went just wide.
Brock served up another great ball, but McGovern's header was just off the mark.
Washington did create a number of scoring chances and finally spoiled the shutout in the 81st minute. James Strine hit a hard shot and Kyle Gaeffke was there for the rebound and found the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Red Devils held strong in the final minutes, allowing just one shot but senior goaltender Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) was there to make the save.
Washington outshot the Red Devils 15-13 while Meagher tallied nine saves on the afternoon. Gavin Campbell came away with five for the Shoremen.
The Red Devils improve to 8-5 overall and move to 4-1 in the conference. They are off midweek before traveling to Gettysburg College to face the Bullets at 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
