(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #12-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-9 setback to #17-ranked Roanoke College on a bitter cold Thursday evening at Biddle Field.
The teams traded goals early, playing to a 2-2 tie as senior Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finished an assist from Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) with just one second on the clock at the end of the first quarter.
Garritt Schwarz opened the second quarter with a goal and an assist to put Roanoke in front, 4-2. The Red Devils countered on a turnover as long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) led a fast break and fed Maher with 3:54 to play in the first half.
IV Strucker netted a late tally to give Roanoke a 5-3 advantage at the break.
Phillips scored unassisted to break up a four-goal run in the third quarter as the Maroons stretched the lead to 9-4, heading into the final period.
Maher scored off an assist from Phillips to start the fourth but Roanoke answered with four straight to hold a 13-5 lead with 5:10 remaining in the game.
The Red Devils looked to rally, scoring four straight to close out the game. Maher triggered the run with Phillips handing out three assists for the final of 13-9.
Jason Sarro led the Maroons with two goals and three assists while Ian Davies made 15 saves as they improve to 3-1 on the season.
Phillips tallied one goal and five assists while Maher found the net four times on the day. Usich was a force in the midfield, controlling eight ground balls and forcing six turnovers on the day. Patrick Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added four GBs as well.
Dickinson slips to 2-2 on the season. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Widener University at 12:00 pm.
