LANCASTER, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team fell behind early and was never able to get all the way back as the Red and White closed to within two late in the second, but came up on the short end of a 64-58 decision at Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday night.
Dickinson took an early 2-0 lead when Anthony Goeb converted a layup. However, triples by Riiny Giir, Solomon Mathis, and Omar Nichols sparked a 13-3 home run that was only slowed for a moment when Drew Haueisen knocked one home from distance. Ryan Robinson and Luke Spellman were able to hold the margin at eight until John Seidman and Mathis scored for the home side to push the margin out to double-digits 21-11 with 9:14 to go. Two foul shots by Goeb and driving layups for Randy Shephard as well as Jack Tierney pulled DC to within six 23-17. The Diplomats stretched the lead back to ten (27-17), before Dickinson ended on a 7-0 charge as Robinson netted five, including a buzzer-beater from 15-feet to make it 29-24 home side at the half.
Bates, Mathis, Robinson, and Solomon traded baskets inside the opening four minutes of the second period, but DC was unable to chip into the deficit as it held at five 33-28. Two minutes later a layup by Spellman aided a free throw from Robinson and a triple for Randy Shephard closing the margin to 37-34. Unfortunately, F&M answered with a 10-3 run ending on free throws for Nichols extending the lead to 45-34. Dickinson kept trying to fight back into the game as Justin Glover, Brandon Wiercinski, and Spellman all hit from long range to bring the Red and White within 51-45 with 7:27 left. A Sam Davison jumper stopped the DC roll for a moment before Robinson dropped four points and Wiercinski added another trey to cut the deficit to 56-54. A Bates layup held the margin at two (58-56), unfortunately, that would be as close as the Devils would get as F&M outscored DC 6-2 the rest of the way to hold on for the 64-58 win.
