CARLISLE, Pa. - The senior trio of Chris Bates, Ryan Robinson, and Jack Tierney accounted for 50 of the Red Devils 71 points as Dickinson held off the visiting Ursinus College Bears 71-66 on Monday night at the Kline Center. The win pulled the Red and White into a three-way tie for fourth in the Centennial Conference standings and leaves them just one game out of third with two games remaining.
A Bates layup just 42-seconds in was the only scoring over the first two-plus minutes until a triple by Trevor Wall sparked a 7-0 Bears run. Dickinson responded with a 9-2 romp over the next 3:14 to take an 11-9 lead with buckets coming from Luke Spellman, Robinson, and Tierney. The seesaw affair continued as the two sides split the following 14 points as Robinson accounted for five, while Bates added a putback layup to keep DC ahead 18-16 at the halfway point. A Brandon Wiercinski three-ball stretched the margin to 23-18 with 7:41 left. The next minute saw a combined eight points scored with Andrew Gostovich and Randy Shephard scoring for the Devils to hold the advantage at five 27-22. The visitors then got "red hot" from distance with Peyton Vostenak hitting twice from deep and Wall adding a triple to finish off an 11-1 charge to end the half at 33-28 Bears.
It became the Tierney show to open up the second period as he racked up the first seven points for the Red and White to pull within 36-35. The Devils would finally get all the way back to take the lead with 17:11 remaining when Anthony Goeb caught a pass from Gostovich and knocked down a three to make it 38-36. Four for Ryan Hughes and three by Everett Beau finished off a 7-2 push for the guests to reclaim a 43-40 edge. After a layup by Jaiden Jakubowski, Gostovich stepped beyond the arc for three to knot the score 45-45, before Tierney notched his eighth and ninth points of the half to keep things level 47-47. The third 7-2 run of the night for Ursinus brought them ahead 54-49 with 7:55 left. However, a three by Bates and jumpers from Robinson and Tierney helped DC reclaim the lead 56-54 at the 13:59 mark. Jakubowski and Wall were determined to send the Bears back to Collegeville with the win as they went on top 57-56. Dickinson took the lead for good with a 7-1 run capped off by a triple for Tierney making it 63-58 with 92-seconds to go. Robinson and Wall traded three-balls before it became a foul shooting contest down the stretch with DC going 5-8 over the final 26-seconds to hold on for the 71-66 win.
