ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior forward Chris Bates recorded his second double-double in his Dickinson career, but it would not be enough as the Red Devils fell 58-55 on Saturday afternoon to the host Marymount University Saints at the Converse Family Fieldhouse.
Bates scored the Devils first four points, before a layup by Ryan Robinson made it 6-6 at the three-minute mark. Montell Cooper and Zamir Clifton went on a 7-2 push over a three-minute stretch to make it 13-8. Buckets from Travis Dobbins and Andrew Gostovich knotted things at 13-13, prior to a jumper by Bates giving DC their first lead of the day at 15-13. Things went back-and-forth over the following four minutes with Robinson netting four, while Brandon Wiercinski knocked home a shot from long range to make it 22-22 with 7:12 remaining. Three triples by Marcus Stubbs helped the Saints open up a 32-24 advantage with 16:54 gone. Bates, Dobbins, and Gostovich all scored for the Devils the remainder of the half to cut the deficit to 36-31 at the break.
Layups from Jack Tierney and Robinson held the margin at six, 41-35, before a Gostovich three-pointer cut it down to 41-38 still with 16:00 left. Xavier Reaves hit a layup to spark a 10-2 outburst with four different players picking up points, while Robinson supplied the only offense for the Red and Black leaving the score at 51-40 with 7:12 to play. Dobbins and Wiercinski each added three points over the next four minutes to make it 53-46. The Devils cut the lead down to five twice on free throws from Anthony Goeb (53-48) and a jumper by Bates (55-50) with a minute on the clock. A foul shot by Cooper bumped the gap to six before Goeb knocked down a corner trey with 34-ticks left. After two more Saints free throws Bates took a nice dish from Robinson to bring the score to 58-55. Dickinson was still not done as Roey Stern missed two at the stripe, but Robinson lost the handle coming across the centerline to end the game.
