Rough First Half Too Much for Devils To Overcome Against Spartans

YORK, Pa. – The Dickinson men's basketball team having not played a competitive game in 625 days gave a good account of themselves on Monday night against a solid York College Spartans team. However, the Devils shot just 8-32 in the opening half and despite going 12-23 over the final 20 minutes could not overcome the Spartans as they earned an 82-63 win.

Both teams began the night slow with the Spartans getting the only five points in the first three minutes on a David Giuliani layup and a Colin Rimel three. Dickinson picked up their first bucket of the season when Ryan Robinson stuck a left-wing triple followed by scores from Aaron Bailey and Jack Tierney to give the road-side a 7-5 edge with five minutes gone. A 7-0 York push made it 12-7 before triples by Robinson and Tierney pulled DC within 17-13 with 7:36 gone. After a free throw from Travis Dobbins cut it to 17-14, Tierney knocked home a trey from the top of the key to draw level at the halfway point. The Spartans used their second 7-0 run of the half to grab a 24-17 advantage prompting a Devils timeout at the seven-minute mark. York continued to distance themselves scoring six of the next eight points to extend their margin to 30-19. Onye Okoro, Robinson, and Tierney would account for the visitors final five points of the opening period as DC went to the break down 39-24. Dickinson shot just 8-32 (25%) from the field in the half, while the Spartans went 15-24 (62.5%).

Robinson converted a pair of foul shots for the opening points of the second period, but then a trey from Rimel and layup for Giuliani made it 44-28 just over a minute in. Dickinson continued to fight back as Bailey finished at the rim twice and laid the ball in after a strong backdoor cut to trim the deficit down to 44-34 with four minutes gone. The next three minutes belonged to York as they went on a 10-1 run capped by a three-pointer out of the far corner by Chris Miers making it 54-35. Tierney would hit a three on the ensuing possession, but then YCP picked up six of the next ten to stretch the lead to 60-42 with 10:18 to play. Four points from Chris Bates, a layup for Tierney, and a foul shot by Bailey kept DC hanging around at 64-52 at the 12:54 mark. Buckets by Robinson and Tierney made it 66-56 with 5:46 remaining. Robinson buried another trey and Bailey finished a tough runner in the lane to bring the Devils within 68-61, but two Sean Kelly free throws along with a Logan Collins jumper pushed the advantage back to 72-61 with less than three minutes remaining. Bailey and Robinson netted the final four Red Devil points of the night as YCP outscored them 10-2 down the stretch to pick up the 82-63 win.
