CARLISLE, Pa. – Bridget Fontaine and Ellie Werner scored third-quarter goals for Dickinson as the Red Devils began Centennial Conference play with a 2-1 win over the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules on Saturday afternoon at the Biddle Field Complex.
The first quarter began slowly for both sides as it would take until the 7:31 mark to have a shot as Amanda Fruman had her attempt snuffed out by the Mules defense. Maleah Hess had the only chance for the visitors in the frame, but it rolled wide of the mark.
Tara Hausker would be the first person to actually test a keeper 4:53 into the second as she was denied by Grace Leard. Unfortunately for DC, the Mules got on the board first when Katie Raab jammed home a rebound past Saige Stevens for the 1-0 lead with 6:52 gone. Muhlenberg supplied the pressure the remainder of the half with Sarah Raab and Zabelle Aslanian each sending a shot wide.
Just over a minute into the third Hannah Spiri had a shot blocked by the defense. Then, three minutes later the Red Devils would cash in as Werner gained control of a loose ball in the circle and fired a shot out of the reach of Leard to tie the score. Dickinson immediately went in search of the go-ahead marker, but Hausker was turned away by Leard and Hailey Womer missed the target. With two minutes remaining in the frame DC grabbed the lead with Fontaine sending a shot beyond Leard.
In the fourth, there were not many offensive chances as Hausker missed wide and Hess had her attempt blocked with 2:33 left allowing the Devils to seal up the 2-1 win.
Dickinson will go for their second straight conference win on Wednesday night when they head to Baltimore to battle Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m.
