Red Devils Split Double-Header at Washington

(CHESTERTOWN, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team split a double-header at Washington College, holding off a big rally in the opener. The Shoremen struck early and held on to win the nightcap, 11-5.

The Red Devils held off a six-running rally in game one to take the opener 13-9. Washington struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Derek Smith (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) led-off the second with a triple and immediately scored on a triple from Christian Kim (Rivervale, N.J./Pascack Hills). The Red Devils doubled the score behind a Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) double and a single from Lukas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass./Berkshire).

The Red Devils erupted with five runs in the fourth, led by a two-RBI single from Delsandro to stretch the lead to 7-1.

Washington put across six runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The Red Devils answered in the fifth with a two-run homer from Andrew Mazzone (Belmont, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) and solo bomb from Smith to lead 10-7.

Dickinson tacked on two in the sixth as Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) drove in Delsandro and Kenny Tagliareni (Hopewell Valley, N.J./Hopewell Valley) singled, stole second and scored on a single from Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter).

Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) singled in Cohen for another insurance run in the eighth.

The Shoremen pushed across two in the bottom of the inning for the final of 13-9.

Mazzone went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while Delsandro was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gannaway added three hits while Tagliarini and Cohen each had a pair with Cohen scoring three runs.

The Shoremen evened the series, taking the nightcap 11-5. The Red Devils went up early with Pell driving in Cohen in the top of the first.

Washington countered with four runs in the bottom of the first and would lead 8-3 at the end of the fifth.

Mazzone added an RBI single in the fourth and Kim came home on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Devils plated lone runs in the sixth and seventh as well. Gannaway doubled and later scored on a passed ball and Colin Jones (Herndon, Va./Herndon) singled and scored off the bat of Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose).

Washington tallied twice in the seventh and once in the eighth for the final of 11-5.

Jones led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 in game two.

The Red Devils are scheduled to face the Shoremen in a double-header again next Saturday in Carlisle. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
