(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team had a tough start against visiting Shenandoah University as the Hornets struck early to post a 16-3 win on Wednesday.

The Hornets used four singles to open with five runs in the top of the first. The Red Devils countered with one in the bottom of the inning as Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) led-off the inning with singles to set up an RBI for Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter).

The Hornets tallied one in the second and Carter launched a two-run double to score Josh Heath (Warwick, Md./Bohemia Manor) and Ian Beumee (Danville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to make the score 6-3.

Shenandoah erupted for seven runs on five hits to stretch the lead to 13-3 in top of the third and pushed across another unearned run in the sixth. The Hornets plated lone runs in the eighth and ninth for the final of 16-3.

Carter went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Volpe went 2-for-4 and Heath finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Cohen drove in a run and came in to throw three innings of relief, allowing just one run while recording three strikeouts. First-year Cole Benner (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) added three strikeouts in three innings as well.

The Red Devils slip to 18-6 on the season. They are home again on Friday, hosting Gettysburg College at 3:30 pm.
